WIS Welcomes Ambassador from the Maldives

On Wednesday, May 14, we were excited to welcome Ambassador Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed of the Maldives and his staff to the Primary School! The visit coincided with the anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Maldives, and fell during Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month.

After watching an introductory video about the Maldives, Grade 5 ISU members interviewed the Ambassador about his country, customs, and traditions. The Ambassador was very excited to answer their questions and help them learn more about his small island nation. Did you know the Maldives is made up of 1,190 islands, only 200 of which are inhabited?

Before leaving, the Ambassador presented the flag of the Maldives to WIS, so that it can hang in the Primary School Gym with the flags of other nations. Then, Embassy staff members presented the WIS students with postcards from the Maldives, each with their name written in Dhivehi, the official language of the Maldives.

It was a wonderful visit, and we are thankful to the Ambassador and the entire team at the Embassy of the Maldives for their support in making this visit possible. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about Maldivian culture and diplomacy.
