Academic Technology in Middle School

Technology Services and Tools
All students in Grades 6–8 are issued a school-owned Chromebook, which ensures their access to all of the online services and instructional tools that WIS provides. These devices also offer many security features that safeguard our students’ online safety and productivity. Students in Grades 7 and 8 are entitled to bring their assigned Chromebooks home each day. All students and their parents or guardians are required to sign a technology Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) at the beginning of each year.

Every Middle School classroom is equipped with a large, state-of-the-art interactive display or video projector. Two dedicated computer labs provide resources for programming, robotics, and other creative applications of technology.

WIS also maintains strict age-based policies related to the use of Artificial Intelligence and other technological aspects of academic integrity. The only AI platform WIS allows for Middle School students is FlintK12, an education-specific tool that is specifically designed for teaching and learning. Flint promotes guided Socratic inquiry rather than providing cut-and-dry answers to questions. No student or school data is used to train Flint’s database and model, so personal information is secure.

Digital Citizenship
The Middle School Digital Citizenship program builds on the foundations established in Primary School. Students expand their engagement with digital citizenship concepts in specific sessions that occur periodically during their regularly scheduled classes. This programming explores real-world scenarios involving communication, digital identity, and decision-making. For example, Grade 6 students cover topics that include oversharing online, digital footprints, copyright, an introduction to generative AI, and media literacy.
