Middle School Assembly Focuses on The Music of Movements
During a special assembly on January 12, as part of the lead up to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Middle School students were treated to an interactive presentation called The Music of Movements. The performers walked the community through the American Civil Rights movement through the lens of artists as activists, helping the audience to find their constructive voice.
Through a mix of storytelling, history, and musical performances, our guests connected music to social justice movements, explaining that "music inherently contains order, unity, and continuity. Turns out, those three attributes are also crucial to social movement. The music of movements reminds us of community... Let's try to see the full picture of our community instead of just our own experience within it. If you want your voice to matter, use it to speak on behalf of your community."
Musical performances included Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land," and Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," among others.
Our presenters reminded the audience that their voices matter, and that they can use their voices for the collective good. We are grateful for our guests taking the time to inspire our community!
