Kindergarten Students Learn About Water Pollution with Hands-on Activity
On Friday, April 3, our Kindergarten students heard from Naabia Ofosu-Amaah, Senior Corporate Engagement Advisor, Water and Resilience at The Nature Conservancy. Naabia, who is also a WIS parent, spoke to our students about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and how it becomes polluted. This presentation is part of their Unit of Inquiry on Water, with the central idea: "The unequal distribution of water around the world can affect our usage, access, and lifestyle."
After the presentation, students engaged in a hands-on activity that shows the effects of pollution on a watershed. Using building blocks, they created a large "hill," then covered it with an impermeable surface. Students sprayed the surface with water to watch it bead and roll down to the bottom, then added pollutants — like glitter and food coloring — to the water to see how quickly they can spread in the entire water supply.
Thank you so much for Naabia for helping our students learn with this wonderful, hands-on experience!
