WIS Students Experience Chinese History at the Embassy’s “Hello, Terracotta Warriors” Workshop

From Christy Nong, Tregaron Mandarin teacher: On October 15, students enrolled in Mandarin at WIS were invited to the Chinese Embassy for a special cultural workshop — “Hello, Terracotta Warriors,” organized by the Xi’an Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Army Museum in China.

During the event, two distinguished professors from the museum, Professor Dong and Professor Elizabeth, gave fascinating lectures on the history of Emperor Qin Shi Huang and his world-famous Terracotta Army. Students learned about the archaeological discovery process, the unique features of the warriors, and the remarkable techniques used to restore these ancient treasures.

In the Q&A session, WIS students actively engaged by asking thoughtful questions, demonstrating their curiosity, critical thinking, and passion for cultural exploration.

The highlight of the workshop was the hands-on restoration activity, where each student received a mini replica of a Terracotta Warrior and restoration tools to simulate the work of real archaeologists. Guided by their teachers, the students carefully restored their warriors, proudly taking home their finished pieces as meaningful souvenirs of this unforgettable learning experience.

To conclude the day, the Chinese Embassy prepared a delicious Chinese lunch, allowing students to experience authentic flavors while deepening their understanding of Chinese culture.

This unique cultural exchange not only enhanced students’ appreciation of China’s rich history but also strengthened mutual understanding and friendship between young people from China and the United States.
