Grade 4 Students Explore DC Memorials
by Grade 4 teachers Angie Bernal, Charles Franklin, Christine Scharf, and Anne Tichadou
On a sunny Friday, September 25, our fourth graders took a wonderful field trip to Washington, D.C. They started at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, using new journals to draw and write down what they saw, heard, and felt. Taking their time helped the students notice small details, connect with inspiring quotes, and practice being curious, thoughtful observers.
Next, the students explored the FDR Memorial with parent chaperones. They loved walking through the four outdoor rooms and listening to the waterfalls while learning about American history. Memorable words like "There is nothing to fear but fear itself" gave them a great chance to talk together, ask good questions, and see how art and nature can bring history to life.
After a fun lunch at the park, the group visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial. The students walked quietly and showed great respect as they looked at the statues, the wall of faces, and the pool of remembrance. Along the way, they learned what veterans truly are and thought about what freedom means. The day was a meaningful, eye-opening experience that helped our students grow in empathy, gratitude, and knowledge.
