Spoken Word Artist Charity Blackwell Inspires Upper School Community

On February 11, we were honored to welcome Charity Blackwell, an award-winning spoken word artist, poet, educator, and dynamic storyteller whose voice ignites conversation, connection, and change, to the Upper School Black History Month assembly! Charity serves as Busboys and Poets’ Director of Poetry Events (D.O.P.E) and DC SCORES Director of Writing, and she her energizing presentation focused on the importance of the spoken word, how it relates to Black History, and the immense power of words.

Charity shared several of her original poems with us, and explained how writing — and the spoken word poetry she performs — has helped her navigate some difficult experiences throughout her life. She encouraged the students to follow their passions, because, as happened for her, "what we love can help us heal."

We are grateful to Charity for spending time with — and inspiring! — our community.
