WISEL Hosts Second Annual Math Olympiad Tournament
Since the fall, twenty-five students in Grades 4 & 5 and ten students in Grades 6–8 have been training once a week as part of the WISEL after school program, sharpening their math skills and preparing for the annual Math Olympiad tournament. The WISzards, coached by Charles Franklin and Vivi Sperling (Primary School) and Cathy Richardson (Middle School), have been working hard to master complex problems, collaborate with teammates, and build confidence in their mathematical thinking.
On Saturday, May 12, we were excited to host the competition at WIS for the second year in a row. This annual tournament was the first MOEMS-sanctioned tournament for elementary school students in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area! This year, our students went head-to-head with teams from two other middle schools and five other primary schools in a friendly, high-energy math showdown.
Both WIS teams had fun, learned so much, and challenged themselves. Our Middle School team won second place; one student had a perfect score during the individual round!
Congratulations to both teams and their coaches on great performances, and thanks again to the WISEL team for making it happen!
