A Week of Cultural Splendor: Lunar New Year Celebrations Span Both Campuses
From Allie Liu, Tregaron Mandarin Chinese teacher: From February 4–6, our campuses transformed into a vibrant hub of tradition and energy as the Mandarin Chinese program hosted a series of events to welcome the Year of the Horse. Students across all grades came together for an immersive cultural journey that featured performances and a culinary experience.
On February 4, the festivities began at the Middle School assembly. Grade 7 students Liza and Jose served as hosts, guiding the audience through the history and background of Lunar New Year in an interactive way. Middle School performances showcased a range of talents: Grade 6 students in traditional ancient costumes performed a Chinese Umbrella Dance centered on the theme “the beauty of strength;” Grade 7 students presented classical Chinese poetry to highlight rhythmic grace and the language’s traditional charm; and Grade 8 students, wearing Han Dynasty attire, performed a Fan Dance that conveyed the “beauty of softness,” earning enthusiastic applause. Chua Martial Arts took the stage to demonstrate animal-inspired Kungfu martial arts styles and then taught students the specific hand gestures associated with different animals.

The February 6 Upper School assembly was led by Grade 12 students Sophia and Charlotte, who organized creative games that educated participants about Lunar New Year and broader Asian cultures while encouraging lively participation from students and teachers. The event concluded with a performance by Chua Martial Arts artists featuring the traditional Lion Dance. Three students were invited on stage for a hands-on learning moment to experience the lion costume and learn the basic footwork required to bring the traditional lion to life.
