Confucius Classroom

In 2010, WIS was selected as one of the 20 pilot schools in the Hanban Asia Society Confucius Classroom Network. As a member of the Network, WIS demonstrates its commitment to serving as a model for Chinese language and culture education in the United States.

Network members partner with schools in China to facilitate learning, both virtually and through student/teacher exchanges. WIS has partnered with two schools since 2010: the Experimental High School (EHS) affiliated with Beijing Normal University and Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College.

WIS students may begin to study Chinese (Mandarin) in sixth grade, with the goal of enabling students in Grades 11 & 12 to select Chinese as part of their International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. In addition to their classes at WIS and field trips and cultural experiences in the greater Washington, DC area, most of our students choose to participate in a summer immersion experience. The trips—approximately two weeks long—include Chinese language and culture classes, and travel to cultural sites within Beijing as well as to other cities such as Tianjin and Xi'An.
