Passport to Summer

Multimedia Zone (Ages 9-14)

9 am – 12 pm or 9 am – 3 pm

Session 1: June 23 – July 3
Session 2: July 7 – July 18
Session 3: July 21 – August 1

Many educators believe that to be successful, the next generation will need skills and knowledge that are not just content based. This upcoming generation will be faced with tasks that require creativity, vision, invention, and risk taking. The days of cubicles and isolation will be replaced by open spaces and teamwork. This Multimedia Zone is preparation for and exploration of what is to come. It is a place to learn, explore, build, create, visualize, sing, dance, and design. It is, in essence, a snapshot of tomorrow. This new collaborative project-based program allows students to produce multimedia work that combines art, technology, and music. Students create a story, make clay figurines, use technology to animate characters or digitalize artwork, create and perform their own music and add it as a sound track to a video. Nothing is mandatory and everything is possible.

Students are registered for the Multimedia Zone for either the morning or the full day. Each student can choose two blocks in the morning and one track for the afternoon. Mornings are skills oriented. Students learn the skills that they use in the afternoon. The afternoons are project based and when students decide whether they want to put on a multimedia show or a live action performance. No matter what they choose, they work together to develop skills of leadership, compromise, listening to one another and working together.

Each session teaches students the skills in the morning and application of the skills in the afternoon. The above blocks will be offered:

MORNING PROGRAM
Garage Band
Students use technology, traditional instruments and anything else that makes sounds to create, enhance and play music. Led by a trained music teacher, this class allows campers to experiment with sound and rhythm to create their own music and style, individually as well as a group.

Technology and Robotics
Students learn planning, problem solving, project management, engineering, animation, and programming for projects in several digital media. The students use Lego Mind storms and other more advanced 3D animation software such as Alice, designed by Carnegie Mellon.

Art
This workshop is designed for students who are interested in the visual arts. Projects are designed around student interests. Students experiment with drawing, painting and printmaking. Mediums include graphite, charcoal, acrylic paint, water color, and others. Three dimensional works includes clay, plaster, and found object sculpture.

Drama
Students are introduced to various aspects of the theater. They explore voice, physical movement, intonation, improvisation and other various components of the theater. Students use a variety of techniques to practice the skills introduced in class.

R & R Zone
Students use this time to have lunch, engage in various sports activities, play board games, listen to music, and generally relax and interact with campers from all the different camp programs.

AFTERNOON PROGRAM
Broadway Bound
Students in this section use art, music and drama to put on a live action play. They can use the skills introduced in the morning for the projects that they choose in the afternoon. Teachers work with students to help them organize themselves and provide any assistance needed to complete the production.

Tech Savvy
Students choosing this track use technology, art, music and robotics to create an animated short. They use the skills introduced in the morning for the projects that they choose to work on in the afternoon. Teachers work with students to help them organize themselves and provide any assistance needed to complete the production. There will be an exhibition for families and friends on the last afternoon of the session.
