The language immersion programs at WIS are designed to provide an academic as well as a cultural experience of the language being studied. These two-week courses introduce or reinforce the spoken and written components of the language. The mornings are structured around an academic course of study. The afternoons are usually activity based when students participate in cooking activities, arts and crafts, and computer games, for example. It is also a time for field trips which include restaurant visits and swimming. These enrichment and cultural activities are a wonderful way for students to use their language in natural social settings.
Ability level
Immersion Beginner: This course
is designed for students who have
never had any instruction in the
language or for those who have had
only one year of study in a formal
setting. The Level 1 course introduces
basic concepts, beginner’s
vocabulary, sentence formation and
topic directed vocabulary and work
on the present tense of verbs.
Immersion Advanced: This course is designed for students who have completed at least two years of study. They must have at least a moderate understanding of the written work and some recognition of the oral language. The Level 2 course reinforces the beginner concepts and then progresses to conjugation and usage of the past and future tense of the verbs. Vocabulary here is still topic centered focusing on using the vocabulary in more advanced conversation settings.

Immersion Intensive ESL: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels
The ESL immersion program provides international students an opportunity to learn and/ or practice their English. The purpose of the program is to reinforce or introduce the students to the written as well as the oral aspects of the English language. Students are asked to take a placement survey on the first day, to determine their level of proficiency and to place them in the appropriate level. Each week, a new theme is introduced and reinforced to the students through readings, conversations and special programs. Students work on grammar skills, conversation skills and vocabulary acquisition.
Each day there is time for field trips and on-campus extension activities. The field trips are designed to enhance a student’s understanding of the theme being studied. These trips can vary from visits to museums to excursions to nearby cities and towns; on campus activities range from cooking to arts and crafts to various sporting activities. This program is a wonderful way for the international student to learn English and see the many wondrous sights around the DC metropolitan area.
