Global Initiatives
What do we mean by a global citizen?
A global citizen is one who seeks out a range of views and perspectives when solving problems. He or she does not "tolerate" or "accept" cultural differences or viewpoints, since these words often implicitly place the speaker at the center of what is acceptable and right.
Global citizens proactively seek out those who have backgrounds that are different from their own, examine ideas that challenge their own, and then enjoy the complexity.
We must go beyond tolerance and acceptance. A global citizen examines and respects differences, and evaluates them critically. He or she does not passively accept all ideas or philosophies. Engagement-in thought, in discussion, in active learning-is the basis for global citizenship.
Global citizens are prepared and willing to challenge bias. They have the self-confidence and self-esteem that gives them confidence in their own convictions. Motivated by a deep appreciation for the value of diversity, they stand up for justice and equality.
How do we educate for global citizenship?
To achieve our mission of educating responsible and effective world citizens, we seek to infuse our curriculum and community with a world view. While we cannot claim to have all the answers, we are guided by special principles in our decisions about the education we provide:
- Offering a rigorous international curriculum based on mastery of basic skills
- Making a commitment to intensive language learning and encouraging personal engagement in learning
- Imparting values of respect for diversity and social responsibility and engaging with the local and global community
