Message from Clayton Lewis, Head of School

Having started my career in education as a history teacher, I have always had great reverence for the past. So I appreciated the opportunity to participate in the 50th Anniversary celebrations that began in January 2016. From our observation of Founder's Day to our May Golden Anniversary Weekend, we had the chance to acknowledge those who were pivotal in envisioning what a WIS education could offer, as well as those who were instrumental in ensuring the School's growth and security over the course of the past five decades. We are very thankful for their legacy.

As this Annual Report shows, WIS received exceptional philanthropic support from the community during the 2015-2016 school year. Whether your gift was intended to honor our Golden Anniversary milestone or not, know that your generosity will help ensure WIS reaches future milestones. Fifty years from now, students, alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends will be honoring your contributions to the WIS story.

There are so many ways community members give back to WIS: by supporting Annual Giving, by bidding during the Fund-a-Student Auction, by volunteering to assist with classroom activities or during school events. We appreciate and value your generosity in every way it is offered.

Message from David Muenzer, Chair of the Board of Trustees

Our Advancement team has worked hard to assemble this 2015-2016 Annual Report; it's WIS's acknowledgment of the critical part the community plays in the lives of our students. We hope you will take a few moments to review what you and your fellow donors have achieved.

Our School has once again achieved exceptional financial results. Another recording-breaking total for Annual Giving (at $1.3 million) including unprecedented generosity during the 50th Anniversary Fund-a-Student Auction ($320,000!), coupled with careful management of costs, allows WIS to maintain a healthy balance sheet. As we uphold our fiduciary responsibility to the School, my fellow trustees and I remain committed to ensuring WIS rests on a financial foundation that has become ever-more-solid over the last decade. Just as WIS’s teachers are responsible for ensuring students are prepared for their future, the Board is dedicated to safeguarding this institution’s future health and prosperity.

I echo Clayton’s thank you to all those listed in the pages of this Annual Report, and I extend my own words of appreciation to the Board members with whom I have the privilege to collaborate. They are among the most dedicated, provocative and perceptive individuals I have known and their service to WIS is unparalleled.

Message from Maggie Daley, Annual Giving Chair

I am so honored to be part of the volunteer team that helped WIS Annual Giving exceed the one million dollar mark for the third year in a row.

This exceptional philanthropic support for the school demonstrates that you "get it" — you know your gifts are an essential part of WIS's ability to provide an education you will not find at any other DC-area school. The Annual Giving team does not take your generosity for granted; we are deeply grateful and proud to be part of a School family that continues to support WIS with contributions large and small.

I also want to offer my personal thanks to our Annual Giving volunteers. Annual Giving would not have achieved a record-breaking $1.3 million total without your efforts. The fact that our community was able to achieve this while observing WIS's Golden Anniversary is all the more memorable. It's a legacy about which all of our donors and supporters should be proud. THANK YOU!
