Because a WIS goal is to prepare students for a life of active, responsible world citizenship, community service is a key part of the curriculum. For younger students, there is no specific service learning requirement. Rather, activities may related to specific Units of Inquiry in the Primary School curriculum or may be initiated by students themselves.
In the Primary School, past activities have included a Pennies for Patients coin drive and participation in the national Jump Rope for Heart campaign, organized by the American Heart Association. Responding to current events, students have assisted with disaster relief, such as raising money for schools in Haiti or organizing a sock drive for victims of the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. Individual grade activities include bulb and tree planting on the campus and in the community, organizing recycling drives, and collecting and distributing canned food.
