Academics Overview

Our challenging international program draws on classroom-based research on pedagogical practices and curriculum design from renowned organizations such as the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB); the Asia Society; and Project Zero, a research group based in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.

The WIS educational approach reflects the increasingly globalized, interconnected society in which we live, giving students a world perspective in mathematics, the sciences, social sciences, languages, literature, technology and the arts.

From Preschool through Grade 5 students follow the inquiry-based IB Primary Years Program; in Grades 6-10 they continue with a multidisciplinary and inquiry-based approach designed to enhance understanding and develop the skills and knowledge needed to become effective global citizens and to succeed in the prestigious IB Diploma Program (DP). All students in Grades 11 and 12 are enrolled in the DP, which prepares them to take exams to receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma in addition to a WIS diploma. The DP is a comprehensive, internationally-focused curriculum that places emphasis on deep understanding of complex multidisciplinary topics.

Language learning is a cornerstone of the WIS program. Students are prepared to be functionally bilingual, beginning with a French or Spanish language immersion program in Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten and continuing with a dual-language program (in English and either French or Spanish) in Grades 1-5; language options in Grades 6-12 vary based on individual student preparation and preferences.
