Message from the Head of School

Washington International School is a remarkable place for learning, envisaged by its founder, Dorothy Goodman, as “a pilot school for the planet.”

From its beginning, WIS has embraced the concepts of global responsibility and social inclusiveness, with an emphasis upon languages as an essential tool for cross-cultural understanding. Other schools have followed WIS by incorporating such elements in their missions, and many continue to look to WIS for leadership. The WIS brand remains distinctive.

Perhaps this distinctiveness is best represented by our human capital and our character. Our multinational families and staff aspire to create a microcosm of the world we want our children to inherit. Our community, both at school and at home, shapes our students’ dispositions. WIS is consciously and explicitly global in its reach, multilingual and multicultural in both belief and practice, and a place where students, families, faculty and staff share their diverse experiences.

We offer a world-class education grounded in creative and critical thinking, and relevant to modern day global challenges. Our curriculum culminates with the highly challenging International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. As one of the oldest IB schools in the world, WIS prepares students for the most rigorous universities in the U.S. and abroad. Over the past ten years, 95% of our graduates have earned the IB Diploma, with an average IB Diploma score of 33, a very high standard indeed.

Maintaining our position of leadership requires that WIS continues to improve. Our teachers find professional guidance through many sources, in particular the International Baccalaureate, Harvard University’s Project Zero, and the Asia Society. We recognize that teaching and learning is in rapid evolution and must take into account new technologies and the need for continuous adaptation.

For me personally, there has never been a more exciting time to work in the field of education. I observe our youngest students and wonder what schools will be like for them as they near graduation. I invite you to join me in anticipation of their future and invite you to learn more by visiting us.
