Head of School Search

The Board of Trustees is delighted to announce the appointment of Suzanna Jemsby to succeed Clayton Lewis as Head of School of the Washington International School, effective August 1, 2018.

This appointment is the culmination of an extensive international search in which the eight-person Search Committee—with the help of the consulting firm Carney Sandoe & Associates—considered numerous highly-qualified candidates before unanimously agreeing that Suzanna is a perfect fit to lead WIS into its second half-century.

Suzanna will come to WIS after serving as Head of School at The Galloway School in Atlanta. Galloway, like WIS, is a thriving independent school with a reputation for excellence, in a metropolitan area with many competitive schools. At Galloway, Suzanna had enormous success in strengthening the academic program and enrollment, and upgrading the school’s fundraising, marketing and fiscal planning. Prior to Galloway, Suzanna was Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE), an educational non-profit that provides professional development training to independent and public schools across North America. Altogether, Suzanna has 21 years of experience in international education at international and independent schools in the U.S. and Europe, and deep knowledge of the IB program. And she has a passion for the mission of WIS.

Suzanna earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Cambridge, U.K.  In 2015, she became a Fellow in the Head of School Program of the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. Suzanna also attended the London College of Music, and is an avid cellist.

We look forward to welcoming Suzanna and her family to our community. But as we make this important announcement, we again thank Clayton Lewis for his extraordinary leadership and vision during what will be an eleven-year tenure as Head of School.

We would also like to thank all members of the Head of School Search Committee, as well as all the members of the WIS community who shared their insights and perspectives as to the type of leader that WIS needs to continue to thrive.
