Admissions Testing
The admissions testing program at WIS differs from those at other independent schools. While standardized test results can be helpful in understanding aspects of a student's ability and potential, we choose to focus on the assessment tools that have been developed by the WIS faculty. We believe that these more accurately reflect the specific demands of the WIS curriculum. However, we ask that students who are taking such standardized tests as the WPPSI or WISC-IV for pre-school and elementary school age children, and the SSAT, ERB, CTPIII, and PSAT for Middle and Upper School applicants, submit the results to WIS as a supplement to their application.
Pre-Kindergarten
Applicants are not tested, but have structured visits so that the School can meet and work informally with them. Children visit in small groups of up to six children. The groups are led by WIS Pre-K teachers and assistants and include free play, an organized movement activity, and a story time. Once the application has been submitted, parent should contact the Admissions Office at (202) 243-1815 to schedule an applicant visit.
Kindergarten and Grade 1
Applicants to Kindergarten and Grade 1 visit in small groups for a structured activity session that lasts roughly one hour. Visits will occur in January and February. After submitting an application, parents should contact the Admissions Office to schedule their child’s applicant visit.
Grade 2 and above
WIS administers its own admission tests in English and mathematics for children entering Grade 2 and above, and language placement tests for students with basic to native proficiency in French or Spanish. In the younger grades, the testing sessions are structured as work groups, with teachers on hand to answer questions and to work through activities with the applicants. Middle and Upper School testing occurs in a classroom-like setting with proctors on hand. Our goal at every level is to make the applicants as comfortable as possible so that they will do their best work.
International and Out-of-Town Applicants
Applicants to Grade 4 and above will have their WIS Admissions Tests sent directly to their current school to administer. The current school will then fax and mail the tests back to the Admissions Office.
