Technology
Information technology and information literacy are essential aspects of education in today’s interconnected world. WIS students are encouraged to make use of the infinite reach of the World Wide Web and explore the growing information technology field. Projects like these help the students weave together such diverse disciplines as history, computer programming, art design, and writing, and add to their sense of global citizenship.
All permanent classrooms at WIS have at least one networked computer that teachers and students can use to enhance the learning process. Over half of the classrooms are equipped with ceiling mounted digital projectors, screens and sound systems to enable teachers to take full advantage of the enormous range of teaching resources on our network and through our online library research databases as well as on the Internet or available on DVD or VHS. Classrooms without mounted projectors have access to projectors and laptops on mobile carts available throughout the school. In addition we have two computer labs at the Tregaron campus and another at the primary campus. There are also computers available for student use in every library.
All students in grades 1 through 12 are assigned an individual network account with e-mail, a personal file storage area and access to the Internet. Using our extranet, students and parents can access the class pages that teachers create to keep them informed of the current work of the class and assignments. Teachers also provide links to relevant electronic teaching resources or notes on these class pages. The extranet allows students to transfer files between home and the school network as well, access research databases from home and submit assignments electronically.
To support these activities WIS maintains a modern network using the latest operating systems and software. We have a fast T1 connection to the Internet from each campus as well as a T1 private connection between the campuses. All teaching areas have wireless networking access so students can bring in personal laptops to use at school.
